Inspired by Ishtar Gate (see photo), the eighth gate of ancient Babylon, using blue glazed bricks to mimic gemstone lapis lazuli. In renaissance, ultramarine blue paint comes from grounded lapis lazuli. It was the color that was more expensive than gold paint. Saint Mary's blue gown was painted in this lapis lazuli grounded ultramarine blue.
